What is involved in volunteering at the
Disciples Conference Grounds?
The Disciple Conference Grounds is a non-profit, volunteer driven summer camp facility owned and operated by The Ontario Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The camp programs offered by the OACC are non-denominational so that every camper feels welcome. A particular theology or doctrine is not taught at the camps. We strive to have a camp community based on Christian Values. The Disciples Conference Grounds is a sacred place where God is experienced in everyday activities surrounded by natural beauty.
All staff register online. This helps with the planning of our overall camping program. This information will only be used by the OACC Camp Manager, Directors, and First Aid person onsite. Online registration of all staff enables the program committee to provide a high level of care to all at the Disciples Conference Grounds, staff and camper alike. The registration process will also allow each volunteer the opportunity to share their skills, certifications and desired position with the Directors and Program Committee.
All young people wishing to volunteer as a Junior Counsellor will need to have a Red Cross Babysitting Certificate. Preference will be given to those who have participated in the CIT (or L.I.T.) camp program. The Babysiting certificate is offered through the Red Cross at many locations and dates across Ontario. Junior Counsellors will gain valuable skills in basic first aid, leadership and safety. All important skills when dealing with the campers or away from camp.
For the Children's Camping Program, all staff over the age of 18, must provide a recent Vulnerable Sector and Police Check to the Director or the Camp Manager prior to the start of the camp session. To obtain your Vulnerable Sector and Police Check you need to visit your local Police Station to fill out the appropriate forms. You will need to take with you 2 pieces of I.D.*, and a note on letterhead from your church or the Disciples Conference Grounds indicating the reason you are volunteering. This process can take a few weeks, so don't procrastinate! (*Please note: Passport, Driver's Licence and Birth Certificate are good options BUT your health card and S.I.N. cannot be used)
Prior to each camp program the Camp Manager will be in contact with Directors to discuss and formulate activities that complement the overall theme of the camp. Staffing assignments will be at the discretion of the Directors, with the Camp Manager assisting to ensure that all essential positions are filled for each camp.
Staff will arrive prior to the campers. Discovery Staff will participate in the pre-camp training. For other camps, Directors will arrive at least 2 hours prior to welcoming campers on site, other staff should arrive 1 hour prior. The Director shall be the last to leave the Disciples Conference Grounds, unless an appropriate staff member has been delegated. Program staff shall ensure that their area has been left as they found it or in a better state!
All staff onsite for each OACC camp will commit to working in a cheerful, respectful manner with all other staff and campers to enhance the camping experience for everyone.
We come to camp to have a good time and share God's Love.
